DIY Hello Door Vinyl

After making a cute welcome wreath for our back door (the one we actually use for getting in and out of the apartment :-p) I worried that the front door was feeling a bit neglected. So I put up a vinyl “hello” sign to greet anyone who walks by our front door!

Isn’t it cute?! It was a quick and easy project and it only took about five minutes to get the “hello” door vinyl cut out and installed!

Plus I used removable vinyl, so when we move out of this apartment we can take the letters off and it will be like they were never there!

I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut the vinyl, but you can easily do it with an Xacto knife or a sharp pair of scissors if you want to do it by hand.

You only need three things to make your own vinyl “hello” door sign:

  • removable vinyl
  • cutting machine, Xacto knife, or scissors
  • washi tape or transfer paper (optional)

I started by choosing a font (I chose Grand Hotel) and designing your “hello”. I used my Studio software and set up the letters so that they were 3.5″ tall, but if you’re going to cut it out by hand, just type it out in a word processing program and print it out. Then just lay the paper over the vinyl and use the printed word as a guide while you cut through both layers.

After my Cameo cut the vinyl, I put two strips of washi tape over the front of the word to help keep the upper halves of the letters lined up as I positioned it on my door. Once I had the “hello” in position, I just pressed it onto the door, being careful to avoid air bubbles and wrinkles as I went.

Then I gently pulled the washi tape off while making sure the vinyl stayed stuck to the door, and voila!

It’s hard to tell in the pictures, but the vinyl is actually a really pretty mustard brown yellow; it’s not nearly as bright and primary color-looking as it appears in the photos. 🙂

Now our door greets anyone who walks past it!

Have you dressed up your front door or entryway somehow? I have plans for a welcome mat, but I haven’t quite gotten around to it yet!

I love your front door~ that hello is so sweet! I did a post on the importance of decorating your front door and so many people commented that they lived in an apartment so they couldn’t do anything until they moved into a house. I love that you are living in the now and embracing what you’ve got! Awesome! 🙂

This is on my “Silhouette To Do List”. I love it! I think I’m making one that says “welcome”, but still, the doors need to be pretty, too, right?

Super cute door vinyl! Love using vinyl since it peals right off and doesn’t damage the door!
