DIY: Holster Those Pesky Pot Lids

Have you ever been in the middle of cooking, two or three pots and pans of delicious food just bubbling away, and then you have to take the lid off of a pot to add the next set of ingredients but you find that you have nowhere to set the lid down?

This happens to me ALL of the time! We have a four burner stove and the tea kettle lives on one of the burners permanently. Cuz where else would tea kettles go? And when I’m cooking, the counter space next to the stove is usually pretty full of stuff from preparing food. So inevitably, when dinner making requires the three other burners (or more likely, requires two burners and I still have a dirty pot on the third burner…), I end up doing some crazy juggling act, spoon in one hand, pot lid in the other, wildly looking around for somewhere to put the lid down while stuff boils over, or burns, or EXPLODES!

Anyway, to try to take some of the stress out of making dinner, I decided to do something awesome about the pot lids. Check it out!

Towel bar to store pot lids
“I decide to stop being sad, and be AWESOME  instead!”

It’s so simple and easy to do, and it does the job perfectly; it’s a brilliantly elegant solution to my problem. To recreate it you need:

  • a towel bar
  • about 10 minutes of your day to install it

A few important tips if you’re going to set this up in your home: measure the “depth”, “height”, and placement before installing. Meaning, make sure that your pot lids will actually fit in the space between the wall and the bar, that the bottoms won’t run into your stove or the tops into your hood, and that you can safely maneuver them around without being too close to the heat of the stove once you install it.

I can’t possibly be the only one who has two pots boiling over and a timer going off at the same time, right? If you’re an experienced dinner wrangler and pot lids aren’t an issue for you, why not stick the towel bar on the back of your cabinet doors? That way you can store your lids near your pots without them being in the way, like they are in my kitchen. :-p

Try it and let me know what you think!

Has anyone ever tried the oven handle for this?? ( it’s the same concept except– no install and it works for a temporary quick solution) And yes folks, I know this won’t work on all oven doors because of style, model or location but it does work, I do it all the time and the steam mess from the lid is much easier to clean…
    Thanks 🙂

That could definitely work short term on some ovens! I just worry I’d forget and open the oven door and the pot lids would all fall down!

    What a cool idea!!
will any steel/stainless steel towel bar do?
provided the measurements are good of coarse…
Or does it have to be a special type/Brand/ etc??

    I love this idea BTW! : )

Yep, any towel bar will do! The one we used is just a cheap one from IKEA. 🙂

Thanks Betsy, I'm always looking for more counter space and this worked out well! And putting the microwave on a shelf is another great idea!

This is a great idea!! So simple and sounds like a great solution. I usually to have counter space now, since we moved out microwave off our counter and onto a shelf – such a great idea! I love having just that little bit more counter space. A little goes a lot way!!

Thanks for linking up this nifty idea at Romance on a Dime!!

Thanks Kendra! We tried stacking lids, but the handles on our lids got in the way and made them tip over 🙁

That is a cool idea! I tend to stack lids on top of each other 🙂

We have a magnetic knife rack as well and it's awesome! Our kitchen is relatively small, so any space-saving measure is a good one for us 🙂

What a nifty idea! Not practical (or necessary) in my kitchen, but it's a great idea!

I love utilizing wall space to free up counter space. My magnetic knife rack is seriously my favorite thing in the kitchen. Ever.
