DIY Pom Pom Branch

Hey all! My name is Nicki and I am so excited to be guest posting today for Jessi while she is on maternity leave- congratulations Jessi! I blog about thrifting, DIY, crafts, and fashion over at Sweet Parrish Place, and I have a really sweet little project to share with you today- my DIY Pom Pom branch! I am going to share a tutorial for making your own pom poms, and how I hung them on my branch. But don’t limit yourself to a branch, the sky is the limit when it comes to pom poms! You can add them to pillows, blankets, make a baby mobile, or just place them in a pretty bowl, etc.

A DIY pom pom branch is a super cute decoration for any time of the year!

I am such a sucker for a good pom pom project, just look at the cute pom pom scarf that is hanging out to the left of my pom pom branch! I did not make this, but it is proof that I adore pom poms, and I get compliments every time I wear it! Another thing that I just love are tassel projects. I have yet to make my own tassels, but it is definitely on my list of things to do!

Here’s what you need for this project:

  • Yarn of your choosing (I chose a multi colored one)
  • Sharp Scissors ( I ended up buying a brand new pair because the ones I had were too dull)
  • Your Fingers ( 1 finger=small, 2 fingers=medium, 3 fingers=large)
  • Branch ( I picked mine up from my yard)

I actually started making these pom poms during a road trip down to Atlanta in July to attend the Haven Conference. And then they sat there in the bag for a few months before I finished them. Even after the pom poms were finished it still took me a little while to decide how I wanted to use them, and I finally settled on my DIY pom pom branch. I ended up hanging it in the stairwell of our split level home, which also serves as our entryway. You can click here to read more about this entryway, which has been a labor of love for me since moving into this home three years ago.

How To Make Your Pom Poms:

(I got carried away while making my pom poms, and didn’t take pictures of the process, plus I was in the car on a road trip, but I think this is a great photo tutorial of the process.)

1. Start the yarn by placing the end on your fingers.

2. Wrap the yarn around your fingers a gazillion times. The more times you wrap it the fuller your pom pom will be.

3. Cut the yarn, and then cut one more piece that is about 12 inches long (or longer if you want to hang them from a string).

4. Stick the 12 inch piece of yarn between your fingers that you wrapped the yarn around.

5. Use tweezers or something to pull the yarn through your fingers to the other side.

6. Tie that 12 inch piece of yarn into a knot around the yarn wrapped around your fingers.

7. Slide the yarn off of your fingers, and finish tying a very tight knot around the yarn. You will have what looks like a little bun.

8. Hold onto to the long pieces of yarn you just tied, and cut through the loops of your bun, all the way around. What you have will look like a scraggly version of a pom pom.

9. Now begin to trim all of that scraggly yarn shorter and shorter until it starts looking like the pom pom you want it to be. Keep trimming until it is as even and fluffy as you like it.

10. Optional- If you want your yarn to be hanging from one string, make your 12 inch piece of yarn as long as you want it to be, and when you tie the knot, make one side of the yarn long, and one short, then cut the short piece off. I didn’t think to do that, so I took a piece of yarn the length I wanted it to be, and wrapped it around the pom pom right over the first piece I tied, and tied it in a very tight knot, then cut off the short end. Boom! I had one piece of yarn to hang mine on the branch!

11. To hang the pom poms from a branch like I did, just tie the yarn around the branch, wrapping it around once and making a knot (pull it tightly), then cut off the excess.

Just in case you were wondering, here are a couple more photos of my entry. I hate it when I can only see one tiny glimpse of a space instead of the whole thing! There have been so many DIY projects that I have completed to get this entry to the state it is in today. When we moved here, it was one of the first things I started to work on because an entry is a person’s very first impression of your home, and I wanted people to have a pleasant first impression. Split levels have never been my favorite, but I am doing the best with what I’ve got!

I chose a multi colored yarn for my pom poms that I found at Walmart. I think it looks really pretty with all of the other colors I have going on in my entry. And the fuzzy pom poms are great for Fall and Winter too! They add a bit of texture and warmth to a space. These were so easy to make, I think I may be addicted now! I want to make some big pom poms for a fun project next!

I hung my branch from three little nails that you can barely even notice. I debated hanging them on some type of hooks, but in the end I decided to keep it simple.

My pom poms were made using three fingers, so they are medium according to my tutorial above. And in case you didn’t notice this little tidbit in the tutorial above, you will need some very sharp scissors. I ended up having to buy a new pair because none of mine were sharp enough to cut the yarn when it came time to do the trimming. But once I had a sharp new pair, it went really easily!

I have to say your tutorial is really nice. I think I might end up making the pom poms to actually hang on the Christmas tree this year. I was looking for an idea I could get the kids to participate and this seems like a very nice one. Thanks!
