Homemade Organic Basil Pesto

This post brought to you by Nature’s Care. All opinions are 100% mine.

My edible garden is doing great! I’ve been outside every weekend now that the weather is nice: preparing the soil, transplanting the herbs, mulching, and generally just getting my hands dirty, and I’m loving every minute of it!

The herbs aren’t ready for harvest yet, but they’re growing like crazy, so I pruned a bunch of them this weekend. Which meant there was enough basil for my first homegrown organic recipe of the year: organic basil pesto!

There's nothing better than homemade basil pesto with fresh homegrown, organic basil!

I’ve been planning this organic edible garden since before we even bought this house and moved in, and I’m so excited that it’s all working out so well! The seedlings sprouted about a month ago, and I transplanted them into larger containers (using Nature’s Care potting soil) to give them a bit more room to grow.

I’m really impressed with this whole Nature’s Care line: it’s a new, natural formula that’s perfect for growing herbs! No weird chemicals in the soil or in the plant food; they even have a pest control spray that’s all natural! I’m lucky that so far my plants are pest free (knock on wood!) but I’m really glad to know that if any pests show up, there’s a natural way to get rid of them that won’t affect my herbs!

I love cooking with my own herbs, and I can’t wait to start making recipes this year! Besides the cooking herbs like basil, oregano, and sage, I’m also growing a tea garden. I have lavender, spearmint, anise, chamomile, and bergamot out in the garden, and I plan to make organic herbal teas once they’re ready to harvest!

For now though, the basil is the only herb big enough to really use, so I decided to make some homemade organic basil pesto! I made this same recipe last year and it was delicious, but this year I made it with the clippings I took from my organic basil when I pruned it.

It’s not a ton of basil, but it’s definitely enough for some pesto!

We have the hardest time keeping basil alive in our backyard. We try, though, cause my husband loves to cook with it!

This sounds delicious ~ I’ve never made pesto before. I always assumed it was too hard. Another recipe to add to my recipe box. 🙂
