How To Make A Turban Headband

The full tutorial for making these awesome turban headbands is below, but if don’t want to make one yourself, I’ll make one for you! You can find these turban headbands in my Etsy shop!

My mom and aunt found some adorable turban headbands on sale one day, but when they tried them on, the headbands were a little too loose and slipped off their heads. So they asked me if I could make some that fit better. So being the good daughter that I am, I said of course. And a year and a half later, I finally got around to making them!

Turns out they were pretty simple to make, so if you want to learn how to make turban headbands, check out this simple tutorial!

These turban headbands ended up working really well because of the elastic at the back! It allows the headband to stretch to fit comfortably, and holds it snugly in place! And the best part is, you don’t have to use a stretchy knit fabric for these. The elastic at the back gives these headbands enough stretch that you can use any fabric in any color or pattern you want for the main portion; stretchiness is not a factor!

How To Make A Turban Headband

Here’s what you need:

  • fun, pretty fabric (any kind, don’t worry if it’s stretchy or not!)
  • 3/4″ elastic

Start by cutting your fabric into two 20″ strips. You can make them however wide you want; the wider the strips, the wider your finished headband will be! The ones I used here are 4″ wide.

Fold one strip in half, right sides in, and sew along the edge with 1/4″ seam allowance to make a long tube. Repeat for the other strip.

Turn each tube right side out. Then cut a 5″ piece of elastic.

Take one end of one tube and fold 1/4″ of the raw edge down inside the tube. Press the fold flat with your fingers, then fold the tube in half on itself lengthwise, so that the end of the tube looks like this:

Repeat on the other end of the same tube. Then sandwich one end of the elastic between the two folded ends of the tube.

Sew across the whole thing a few times to hold the elastic in place.

Now flip the tube around so that the raw edges are on the inside. It makes the whole seam look much prettier, don’t you think?!

Now you have a loop of fabric with a piece of elastic coming out of one end.

Now take the other tube of fabric and fold both ends the same way as the first tube (raw edges inside the tube, then fold in half lengthwise). Before you sew the elastic onto this second loop, slide one end through the loop you already made. This will interlock the loops so you get the “turban” look when the headband is finished.

Sandwich the other end of the elastic between both ends of the second tube. It’s exactly the same as before, just make sure that the two tubes of fabric are interlocking before you sew the elastic in.

Flip the seam of the second tube right side out so the seam is on the inside (just like before) and you’re done!
