We bought a house last week!!! We closed on the house last Thursday, and we’re moving in this week; so exciting! So before we actually get all of our stuff moved in, I thought I’d share some pictures and take you on a little new home tour! (Sorry in advance if this post takes FOREVER to load; I went a little shutter happy when taking pictures!)
I’m so in love with this house; it’s totally adorable, it has gorgeous hardwood floors, all the walls except those in the master bedroom are painted white (which makes it the perfect canvas for adding an accent wall here and there, or adding pops of color with the furniture instead!), and it’s 110 years old but was recently remodeled so it’s the perfect mix of cute old charm and modern style!
Here’s what it looks like from the street.
Cute, right?! The outside is in pretty good condition, and I even like the grey color with white accents, so it means I can focus on getting the inside decorated and don’t have to worry about the exterior for a while!
Just inside the front door is an awesome little entryway! It isn’t heated, but it is fully enclosed and protected from the elements, so we can put a bench and a coat rack out there and it will be the perfect place to sit and put on or take off shoes. And I love the bead board accents!
The door from the entryway leads you into the living room. The house has radiant heating, which I love! It’s a bit annoying because radiators take up usable space, especially when they’re right against a wall or something, but it’s a super efficient way to heat your house, and they give the place a kind of fun, retro look.
It’s only a decorative fireplace, but with a built in mantel/fireplace/bookshelf thingy as gorgeous as that, I can forgive the fake fireplace!
To the left is a giant sun room. It used to be the front porch of the house, but it was enclosed and turned into “part of the house” instead of a separate porch that is just “attached to the house”. LOOK AT ALL THE WINDOWS!!!! Three walls are completely made up of windows, and there’s a 50″ window on the fourth wall as well that looks backwards into the backyard! I’m going to spend all of my time here, sitting in a giant chair and reading; I can already tell!
Speaking of all the windows, this house gets a TON of natural light! I took every single picture in this post without turning a single light on; I just used the natural light that was coming in through the windows. Which probably explains why there aren’t any light fixtures on the entire first floor except for a chandelier in the middle of the dining room and the recessed lighting in the kitchen. No lights anywhere else because you just don’t need them; how cool is that?!
Looking back at the front door from inside the living room you can see the stairs going up to the second level, and off to the left are the stairs down to the basement. LOVE that staircase! And I really love the cute little radiator covers you see on about half the radiators; they’re so fun!
You can see some of the original touches that were left in place during the remodel in the staircase railing.
Another thing I love about this house is how open the space is! Most of the houses in this neighborhood are about 100 years old and they still have their original floor plans; that means each room is its own little “island” with tiny doorways connecting one room to another. But that’s not true in this house! From the sun room at the front of the house you can look through the living room, through the dining room, all the way into the family room at the very back of the house! And the doorways are all huge, like 5 feet wide!
From the dining room you can see both the family room and the kitchen, so it’s a great layout for entertaining because the kitchen isn’t tucked away in a corner by itself.
The original house ended at the back of the dining room, but the family room was added on as an addition during the remodel the previous owners did. I love how open it is to the kitchen!
Did I mention already, the kitchen is white! I know white can be a boring color, but in my opinion, when it comes to a house you just bought, white is the best color ever! It’s neutral, so if I don’t want to paint right away, I don’t have to. And you can always add color to your rooms with furniture or decor, and it’s easier to throw new pillows on the couch than it is to repaint a wall when you get tired of the color. Plus it’s always been my dream to have a white kitchen, and now I do! I may want to add a bit more contrast in there later, but that’s a project for the future; for now, the kitchen is perfect!
It’s a little cozy, but it’s definitely big enough for the two of us to both be cooking at the same time, and right now that’s all we really need!
Plus it has a greenhouse window right above the sink, which will be PERFECT for starting a little indoor herb garden!
Just past the kitchen is the back door which goes out into the yard, and there’s a tiny little half bath there as well.
The back entryway is pretty cramped; the door opens right into a tiny two square foot area and past that is a little hallway before you reach the half bath. It’s going to take a bit of organizing to make sure that space is functional, but I think we can make it work!
Upstairs is the master bedroom, a full bathroom, and two smaller rooms, all coming off a tiny hallway.
The bathroom has a jetted tub, I’m so excited for that!!!
The first room off the hallway to the left is going to be JM’s den/the guest room for whenever we have people come visit. He has been such a saint about my craft stuff taking over the entire apartment while he’s stuck with a desk in a corner of the living room, so I’m really thrilled we have enough space now for him to have a whole room to himself! There’s a daybed and a dresser in the room already from the previous owners, but we haven’t decided yet whether those will stay there or not.
The next room on the left is going to be my craft room. That’s right, a whole room just for crafts and projects and blogging; I’m in heaven!!!
Just to the right of the door is a 6 foot closet; it’s going to be awesome for storing all my craft supplies!
The master bedroom is definitely my favorite room in the entire house; it’s so big and glamorous! It’s actually two rooms separated by a giant open doorway; the back half of the bedroom is the second story of the family room addition, and the front half of the room is the original bedroom that was in this space before the addition.
I’m really excited about the closets in this bedroom, they are both HUGE! And if you remember from the tiny apartment tour I put up on the blog earlier, we didn’t have a closet at all in the bedroom in the apartment. So these two 10 foot closets are a huge improvement!
For now we will probably use the front half of the bedroom as office space and a dressing room.
And the house has a great backyard too! It’s not huge, but it’s really cute, and it will be perfect for us!
Just outside the back door is a tiny little porch, just big enough for a table for two. It’s not big enough for grilling, but it will be perfect for us to eat breakfast or have coffee outside when the weather warms up!
Luckily there’s a brick patio in between the house and the detached garage, so we will still have a place for grilling! Plus the previous owners left us their patio furniture, score! And, how cute is that garage?! It’s like a tiny little house of it’s own, and I love the trellises on the front; I can’t wait to get a climbing ivy growing there!
We haven’t ever actually seen the ground cover in the backyard because there has been a foot or two of snow on the ground for the past three or four months, but I imagine that the brick patio ends just past the patio furniture and that there is grass under that snow at some point. There’s also a great raised garden bed on the left side of the garage, so I’m excited to start gardening in this house!
And I’m super excited about this garage; is that weird?! I think it’s because, growing up we had a garage, but it was always full of stuff so we never actually put a car in there. This garage is a two car garage plus it has about six extra feet off to one side. I’m super excited to pull out some of the stuff the previous owners left in there and build in a giant workbench! It’s going to be great to have an actual work space indoors; no more dragging the circular saw out into the alley to work on DIY projects!
Plus, see those stairs? Yes, that’s correct, it’s a 2 story garage! That is not just a large attic space, it is actually a whole second floor up there!
The walls aren’t finished and it’s not heated, but I’m already picturing a future craft room! It can’t be that hard to put up insulation and drywall, right?! :-p
So there you have it; that’s our brand new home before we get our furniture moved in! I’m super excited to start decorating, organizing, and actually living in this space!
