Simple DIY Clock Makeover!

Do you ever get the itch to change stuff around? I’m always wanting something new, something fun, something different. So after years of looking at this plain, boring white clock on our wall, I decided it was time for a clock makeover!

It’s so fun now! It makes such a difference in our living room, and it was so quick and easy to do. Definitely worth the twenty minutes it took!

DIY Clock Makeover

It’s easy to do your own clock makeover. You just need to make a new face for your clock, take it apart, put the new face in, and put it all back together!

You need:

  • a plain clock with a removable back (this one came from Target, like $7)
  • paper for the background
  • paper for the numbers
  • scissors (or Exacto knife, or cutting machine)
  • glue stick
  • ruler to measure the face of your clock
  • screwdriver or other tools to remove the back of your clock

First, decide what papers you are going to use for your background and numbers. Anything is better than just the plain white and black, right?

Second, take apart your clock. Start by taking the battery out, then take off the back. There were six screws holding the back of my clock on. Once you’ve taken the back off, flip the clock back over and remove the hands. The hands on my clock were all attached to a post in the middle of the face, and I was able to remove them by gently pulling them off. Then remove the current face of your clock if possible. The white face of my clock was glued on, so I couldn’t remove it, but I added my new face right over the top and it worked out just fine!

Measure the diameter of the current clock face, then cut out a circle of that size from your background paper. I used my Cameo (love it!) to do all the cutting for this project, but scissors or an Exacto knife will work great. Don’t forget to cut a small hole in the center of your new clock face for the post that the hands attach to!

Cut out numbers for your new clock face and glue them on to the background circle. I glued the 12 on first, then the 6, 3, and 9 cuz it’s fairly easy to eyeball quarters. Once those are on, just stick the 1 and 2 evenly between the 12 and 3, etc. etc. Once your glue is dry, stick the new face into your old clock. I used three small bubbles of tape on the back of the new face to hold it down flat so the hands don’t catch on the paper as they rotate around.

Put the hands back on your clock, re-attach the back, put the battery back in, set the clock to the correct time, and you’re done!

I just love it! It’s definitely more interesting now, and the numbers are a little fancier than they used to be, which I think gives it class. 🙂

Do you also have the itch to keep changing things up? I love making changes that make a big impact but require very little effort.

Those of you who knew me in high school (and a bit in college, I guess) will remember some of the crazy hair colors and cuts I sported back then. The hot pink and black spikey pixie cut was my favorite!

This looks great! I love how you made the numbers all vertical, so you don’t have to adjust your perspective between the 3 and 4, and the 8 and 9. The khaki color is lovely, too.
