DIY Vinyl Halloween Door Decorations

We never had trick-or-treaters stop by when we lived in our previous apartment, so we are super excited to be in a house this year! I already put up some lawn decorations (remember my DIY floating Halloween ghosts?), but our front door was feeling a little bit bare. So I made my own spooky Halloween door decoration with black vinyl!

It’s Oogie Boogie from Nightmare Before Christmas!

Here’s what you need to make your own Halloween door silhouette: (affiliate links below to the products I use and recommend)

  • adhesive black vinyl
  • Silhouette Cameo (or scissors or an X-acto knife)
  • black paper
  • scissors
  • painter’s tape

I used my Cameo to cut the Oogie Boogie shape out of my black vinyl. I seriously LOVE this machine; it makes it so simple to make awesome silhouettes like this one! Plus, it can cut a roll of vinyl up to 10 feet long, so I was able to make this with just two long pieces of vinyl, meaning I only had to line up one edge, which is awesome!!!

Cut whatever shape you would like out of your black vinyl using your Cameo, scissors, or an X-acto knife. If you plan to place the vinyl on the inside of the door to protect it from weather, remember that your design will need to be mirrored. If you are adding letters or numbers, make sure they are reversed as you cut them out! If you like the Oogie Boogie silhouette I made, you can find it here in my Etsy shop!

Once your vinyl silhouette is cut out, peel the backing off the vinyl and carefully adhere it to your door or window. (If you want specific instructions for this part, check out this post about the vinyl Halloween window decorations I made in the apartment.) If there are any extra spaces between your design and the edges of the door or window, cut pieces of black paper to size and tape them over the gaps. I used black bulletin board paper because it comes on a large roll and I wanted to cover the entire door so light only came through the spaces around Oogie Boogie’s head.

After you’ve covered all of the glass in vinyl and black paper, you’re done! Turn on the lights, head outside, and enjoy your Halloween door decoration!
