DIY Spring Welcome Wreath

I have been seeing all these gorgeous spring wreaths lately, but we live on the second floor of an apartment building, so our “front door” just faces into a hallway and decorating it does less than nothing for our curb appeal! But I was totally inspired to make a spring wreath anyway when I saw this fun tulip wreath tutorial from my friend Jacque at The DIY Village a few weeks ago. It’s so cute and so easy to make, I just couldn’t resist!

I ended up hanging it on our back door, which leads out to a staircase down to the alley below, and it’s kinda perfect! We go in and out through the back door 99% of the time anyway, and you can see it from the alley if you look up, so at least it isn’t hidden inside an apartment building hallway!

This little wreath was super easy to make, and really inexpensive too!

Here’s what you need:

  • a foam wreath form
  • super wide ribbon (I used about 6 yards for the entire wreath)
  • fake flowers
  • any decorations or embellishments you want to add (I used a plain wooden sign, a wooden picket fence cutout, a little bird, and some fake grass, all from Michael’s)

The best part about this wreath is that you can find the first three materials at the dollar store! Makes it very affordable!

Start by wrapping ribbon around your wreath form. I took a straight pin and pinned the end of the ribbon to the back of the wreath form to keep it secure. Make sure a little bit of ribbon overlaps itself each time you go around; you are basically making little “pockets” to stick the flowers in. Once you get to the end, pin the ribbon at the back of the form.

If your flowers came in “bushes” instead of single flowers, grab some wire cutters and cut them apart so you have a bunch of individual stems. You may also want to cut the stems down so they are only about 2″-3″ long; otherwise they will stick out of your wreath.

Take a single stem and slide it into the wreath, between two layers of ribbon.

Slide the stem all the way in between the ribbons, and make sure it is towards the outside of the wreath. Then take another stem and add it to the wreath at the next ribbon overlap, again towards the outside of the wreath.

I had five colors of flowers, so I decided to spread them out a bit and make them random. You can see I have blue flowers in every other ribbon “pocket” in the photo above, and that I started to fill the spaces with yellow flowers. It doesn’t matter what order you do them in, just make sure you put one flower in every single “pocket” all the way around the wreath, and that the flowers are towards the outside of the wreath.

Once your outer ring of flowers is finished, start adding flowers near the inside of the wreath. Just slide another stem in between two ribbons, exactly like you did before, but this time push the flowers towards the inside of the wreath. You may need to wiggle them around a bit to get the stems to slide all the way in without getting stuck on the stems from the first ring of flowers.

Continue adding flowers to the inside of the wreath until you have gone all the way around.

Now, fill in any gaps where you can see the wreath form by adding flowers in the middle. You probably don’t need to make an entire “middle ring” with flowers in every pocket like you did for the inside and outside, but you might end up doing every other, so make sure you have enough flowers! At this point it’s just personal preference as to how full you want your wreath to be, and whether it’s ok to see the blank wreath form or not. Just fill in any holes that bug you!

Pretty, right?!

If you like the wreath with just flowers, you can be done! Go hang it on your door and admire the fruits of your labor!

I love how full and bright it is, but I wanted to add a little bit more and make it into a welcome sign too! So I gathered a few more supplies. I found a cute little picket fence cutout at Michael’s and a little foam bird. I also found a blank piece of wood to make the welcome sign.

I started by painting the wooden sign white. I used my Cameo to make a stencil for the word “Welcome!” and cut it out of contact paper. Once the white paint was dry, I stuck the stencil to the sign. Then I used a foam pouncer to paint the letters purple. Once the paint was dry, I peeled off the contact paper and drilled two tiny holes in the wood so I could hang the sign.

Next I worked on the fence. I couldn’t find small fake grass at Michael’s, but I did find a big frondy thing that sorta looked like grass. So I just cut the tips of the plant off and hot glued them on to the fence. Once the grass was on the fence, I glued the little bird to his perch on top of a fence post!

Now all that’s left to do is put it all together!

I wanted the fence inside the center hole of the wreath at the bottom. So I slid the bottom of the fence in front of the wreath form but behind the flowers. Then I glued it in place.

I strung the welcome sign with baker’s twine and pinned the twine to the back of the wreath form with a few straight pins to hold it in place. This part actually took the longest of the whole project because it kept hanging wonky. I probably played with it for like half an hour before I was happy with it!

Then just stick it on a wreath hanger on your door and you’re done!

What do you call curb appeal if you don’t have a curb?! I really can’t wait until we have a house and a front yard so I can do pretty things that people might actually see!
