Organize kids clothing with these cute dresser drawer labels; the images make it so even young kids can help put away their clothes in the right drawer! Grab the free printable or free SVG file here!
Keeping kids’ clothes organized can be a challenge! Even if you and your kids have good habits about putting away clothes, little kids may not be able to pull open full-sized dresser drawers by themselves, or they may not remember which clothing goes where. (TBH, sometimes even I don’t remember what goes where!) After a few years of trying different things, we finally found a solution that works great for us: IKEA Trofast bins and cute vinyl drawer labels! AJ can now help with laundry by putting her own clean clothes away; she can pull out the bins and she knows exactly where her clothes go because of the little pictures. And even though she can’t read yet, she gets a little extra letter and spelling practice when getting dressed every day.
If you want to get your kids’ clothing organized, I’m sharing these cute dresser drawer labels with you for free. There is a free SVG file and a free printable PDF file so you can make these labels however you want. Grab the free files below!
DIY Dresser Drawer Labels For Kids Clothing
- Time spent doing stuff: 30 minutes
- Time spent waiting around: 20 minutes
- Total project time: 50 minutes
- adhesive vinyl (black)
- transfer tape
Start by opening Cricut Design Space and creating a new blank project. Upload the free dresser drawer labels SVG file (grab it at the bottom of this post) and insert it into your project canvas. Here’s a refresher on how to upload your own image to Design Space if you need it.
Resize or modify the images as needed for your labels, then click the green “Make It” button at the top right to send the design to your machine for cutting.
Preview the mats to make sure everything looks ok, then click the green “Continue” button at the bottom right.
I used black Oracal 631 vinyl for this project, so I set the material to “Matte Vinyl” to get the right cut settings with my Cricut Maker. If you have an Explore series machine, turn the dial to Vinyl, or use the Custom setting and choose “Matte Vinyl”.
Make sure the fine point blade is installed in your machine, then position your adhesive vinyl face up on the green StandardGrip cutting mat and load it into the machine.
Press the flashing Go button to begin the cut.
Unload the mat when the machine is done cutting and repeat these steps until all mats are cut.
Once everything is cut, carefully weed away the excess background vinyl from all of the cut shapes.
The easiest way to transfer your design from the adhesive backing paper onto your dresser drawer is to use a piece of transfer tape. Peel the paper backing off of a piece of transfer tape, then position it over your design, pressing down firmly to ensure the transfer tape is stuck to the vinyl. You can even use the transfer tape to line up two pieces (like the icon and the word) so that you can place them both onto the drawer at the same time.
Peel the backing paper off the vinyl, making sure the actual vinyl design stays stuck to the transfer tape. Position the transfer tape and vinyl on your dresser drawer, pressing down firmly to ensure the vinyl is stuck to the drawer. I like to use a credit card to really push down on the vinyl and make sure it’s stuck. Then carefully peel up the transfer tape, making sure the vinyl sticks to the drawer and doesn’t come up with the transfer tape.
Do this for all of the drawers in your dresser, and you’re done!
The labels make it so easy for AJ to help with laundry; she can put away her clean clothes all by herself!
We even have labels on the Ikea Trofast bins we use for the baby’s clothes; even though she obviously can’t help put her own clothes away yet, it makes it easier for Jon and I to put stuff away in the right place, and to find the right clothes when getting her dressed.
