Homemade Moisturizing Body Wash

Ever since I saw my friend Vanessa’s homemade body wash on her blog, I knew I wanted to try it! I really love homemade beauty products because you know exactly what goes into them, and usually they’re a lot cheaper to make yourself. And this one is no exception! I finally made a batch of this homemade body wash, and it is awesome, and way less expensive than buying body wash from the store!

I also decided to add a few essential oils to give it a nice scent. Here’s what I used: (affiliate links below)

I used the tea tree Dr. Bronner’s soap because tea tree oil can help moisturize dry skin, plus I like the scent. But feel free to choose whatever scent you want! Just be careful of scents like peppermint; the tingling might be too strong on sensitive parts of your body!

I followed Vanessa’s homemade body wash recipe exactly, so check out her post for directions. The only change I made was between steps 2 and 3 I added five drops each of Lavender and Grapefruit essential oils. I chose Grapefruit because I love the smell, and Lavender because it’s great for moisturizing dry skin.

And it turned out amazing!

It thickened up nicely after letting it set for 24 hours. If you notice your body wash start to separate out during the 24 hours, gently turn the bottle over to mix it and then let it sit again.

The whole batch of body wash took less than twenty minutes to make (besides the 24 hours it took to solidify slightly), and it only cost me about $12 for the bar soap and the glycerin. The batch yielded 12 cups of body wash, so at $1 per 8oz, this homemade body wash is way less expensive than buying it at the store!

What oils would you use in your body wash?

I used Young Living’s lavender essential oil, which is probably my favorite of all the ones they make; it’s so versatile! It’s great for helping you relax (I’m definitely making some lavender bath salts next!), and it helps heal chapped, dry skin, minor burns, and itchy bug bites, so I knew it would be great in this body wash!

If I were to use liquid castile soap, what would the measurements look like?

Hmm, good question! I don’t know, but I imagine you can just try thinning out the liquid soap a bit with water, but maybe not as much water as the original recipe calls for!

How did you grate the soap bar? Would a food processor work or is the soap too hard?

I just used the grater blade on my mandoline this time around, but in the past I’ve used a hand cheese grater, a cheese grater block, and the grating attachment on my food processor; they all work great! The soap is definitely not too hard for the food processor, and if you don’t want to grate it by hand, that’s a great option!
