Summer is the perfect time for grilling, especially if you’re planning to have guests over! My sister in law was out here last week from California, and we decided that part of her “Chicago experience” had to be learning how to build a Chicago style hot dog! So we set up the grill and got to work!

When Ball Park brand asked me to share my favorite summer grilling recipe, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to bust out this Chicago style hot dog recipe! At it’s most basic, a Chicago style hot dog is an all-beef frankfurter on a poppy seed bun, topped with delicious toppings! There are always a few small variations with regard to the toppings depending on your tastes, but today I’m going to teach you how to build the “standard” Chicago style hot dog!

We used Ball Park Park’s Finest hot dogs for our little grill party because they are a premium beef hot dog made with 100 percent beef, and they contain no artificial preservatives, no artificial flavors, colors or fillers, and no nitrates or nitrites added. Plus they come in some awesome flavors if you want to add a little pizzazz to your hot dog!

And if you love to grill, Ball Park brand has an awesome opportunity for you: On August 12-14 in New York City, Ball Park and a team of grill masters will attempt to break the world record for the longest running group BBQ at the Finest Grillathon using Ball Park Park’s Finest hot dogs, and you can join them! If you think you have what it takes to be part of the world-record breaking grilling team, submit a video grilling your finest hot dog creation and tell Ball Park brand all about your passion for grilling hot dogs and why you deserve a spot on the team. Enter here for your chance to win a spot on the team!

Directions:

Start up your grill, and while you wait for it to heat up, slice the tomatoes and dice the onions. NOTE: Chicago style hot dogs can be steamed, simmered in water, or grilled; we chose to grill these hot dogs because I think it adds a better flavor!

Put the Ball Park Park’s Finest hot dogs on the grill and heat them until they’re hot all the way through and get the awesome grill marks on all sides.

  1. Start with a poppyseed bun.
  2. Add the hot dog.
  3. Add yellow mustard. (Remember, dress the dog, not the bun!)
  4. Add a healthy amount of sweet pickle relish.
  5. Sprinkle chopped onions on top.
  6. Tuck two sliced tomatoes down one side of the bun.
  7. Tuck a dill pickle spear into the other side of the bun.
