One of my absolute favorite organizing tools right now is my DIY bulletin board. It’s a combo dry erase/cork board that is also magnetic, and I love it!
(The projects are top secret, but you’ll see them soon enough on the blog!)
I call this project a DIY bulletin board, but it really is more of an upcycled bulletin board. I’ve been wanting a dry erase cork combo board, but they’re like $30 minimum for a tiny 8.5×11″ one, and ones this size are upwards of $50. Yikes!
So I upcycled an old dry erase board I had. It used to look like this…
It was useful back in college when I wanted to write down exams and papers on a schedule I could easily see, but it’s not so useful anymore. I have a great desktop calendar on my computer that I use for bill reminders, vacations, doctor appointments, etc. Plus I had basically scratched off the dry erase covering in places and was writing straight onto the metal underneath. 🙂
So I decided to remake it into a prettier, more useful board!
DIY Bulletin Board
Here’s what you need:
- a board of some kind
- dry erase vinyl (can be found in any craft store)
- cork board (same, go to a craft store)
- (magnetic paint if you want your board magnetic and it isn’t already)
Start with your board. If you want your board to be magnetic and the board you’re starting with isn’t already, you can use a bit of magnetic paint as a base coat.
Next, decide how much of your board you want to be dry erase and how much you want to be cork. Use a few pieces of dry erase vinyl to cover the dry erase section. I found a roll of dry erase vinyl at Michaels that was 14″ wide, so it fit perfectly across the top of my board.
Then I took a square piece of cork (also from Michaels) and cut it into thirds to cover the bottom section of the board. I used craft glue to attach the cork sections to the board and voila! DIY bulletin board that is magnetic, dry erase, and a cork board!
I hung it right under the shelves above my desk, so it’s at the perfect height. If I need to write something down, I can just swivel around in my chair and do so!
I’m always on the lookout for better ways to organize my life. I used to be able to keep track of it all in my head, but now I’m way too forgetful. If I don’t write it down I won’t remember it. How do you keep track of stuff like this? Have you seen any other bulletin board upcycles I should go look at?
