11 Garden Projects To Brighten Up Your Yard
Not only is this compost bin super functional, but it wasn’t all that hard to make!
We basically took a bunch of cedar boards, put them together into three sides, made a fourth “front” side with a hinged lower half, covered it in hardware cloth, and added a top!
If you want to build your own compost bin, you can get a detailed list of exactly what hardware and tools you need, as well as a cut list that tells you what lumber you need and what size it should be cut to. There’s also a detailed step by step tutorial so you can easily build this for yourself. Get it all here: DIY compost bin tutorial and materials lists.
The lower half of the front opens so you can get the finished compost out from the bottom, and the lid opens up easily with only one hand for you to add food scraps and yard trimmings. I also added latches to keep out critters, and I even put hardware cloth over the bottom of the bin to keep anything from tunneling into the compost from underneath.
The whole thing is super sturdy and works great! I’ve been using it for years now, and it’s the perfect addition to our back yard!

I love the concrete planter and fountain. There’s something about the juxtaposition of industrial concrete and plant life that I really love. That’s why I love to use it so much in my garden.
