Halloween is coming up soon, are you ready?! If you need a great last minute Halloween decor idea, these adorable floating Halloween ghosts will take you less than 10 minutes to put together!
DIY Floating Halloween Ghosts
Here’s what you need:
- foam balls
- lightweight white cotton fabric (about 1 square yard per ghost)
- black construction paper
- scissors
- dowels or garden stakes
- spray adhesive
Start by cutting your fabric into squares. When you place the fabric over the foam ball, you want it to hang down well past the ball to form the body of the ghost. For the 6″ foam balls I used, I cut my fabric to about 30″ x 30″.
Cut out two small ovals from black construction paper to make eyes for each ghost.
Stick the dowel into the foam ball. Make sure it goes in at least 3″-4″. If you live in a windy or rainy area, you may want to use garden stakes instead of dowels to give the ghosts a little more support. The ghosts do just fine in the rain, but the fabric gets quite heavy when wet.
Spray the top of each foam ball with spray adhesive. Place the fabric square over the ball, pressing it down onto the adhesive at the top.
If you want the eyes to be translucent, like the ghosts in these photos, you can attach them to the foam ball under the fabric. Lift up the fabric at the front of the ghost, then glue the paper eyes directly to the foam ball using spray adhesive. Press the eyes on well, then lower the fabric back down over the front of the ghost to “obscure” the eyes. If you want the eyes to be dark and solid, attach them on top of the fabric, instead of under it.
All that’s left is to head outside and plant the ghosts in your yard! Make sure the dowel or garden stake goes at least 6″ into the ground to help keep the ghosts sturdy even if it’s rainy or windy.
They look especially great at night (perfect for when the trick-or-treaters arrive!), but they’re still super cute during the day!
