Halloween Bouquet and Vase

Hey there! I’m Michelle, the gal behind The Painted Hinge, a DIY project and craft blog. I came across Practically Functional when I first started out blogging and it has been a constant source of inspiration to me since! I’m so happy to be guest posting for Jessi while she is on maternity leave!

Today I’m doing a tutorial on how to spruce up dollar store silk roses and vase to make a hauntingly gorgeous Halloween bouquet and vase. I just love dollar stores because I can walk through them and get a ton of creative project ideas without breaking the bank!

Swing by the Dollar Store for everything you need to make this Halloween bouquet and vase.

Here’s what you need for this project:

  • dollar store silk roses in black – $2.00. (Mine had little plastic spiders in them- bonus! 🙂)
  • 1 dollar store clear glass vase – $1.00
  • Chalk paint in red and black
  • Elmer’s Glue
  • Paint brushes

The materials for this project only cost me $3.00- that’s right, $3.00!- not including the paint and other craft supplies. That’s another great thing about dollar store project brainstorming- I always have craft supply “leftovers” from previous projects, and it seems like I almost never have to buy any new supplies for my dollar store projects! It’s win-win! 🙂

Directions:

Paint the vase with the red chalk paint and allow to dry thoroughly.

Paint a coat of Elmer’s glue over the red chalk paint. The thicker the coat, the more crackling effect you will have with the finished product. Allow to dry until it is tacky to the touch… mine only took a few minutes to dry, but we live in a very hot and dry climate, so it may take longer to dry depending on where you live.

Once the Elmer’s Glue is tacky to the touch, paint a coat of black chalk paint over everything. Allow to dry for at least a few hours, or overnight.

While the vase is drying, paint the silk roses. Start from the innermost part of the rose and work your way out. Paint the inside of the rose petals only, about ¾ of the way up, leaving the petal tips black. The paint will seep through the silk petals, so use as little paint as possible to do the job.

When you finish the inside of the outermost petals, paint the outside of the flower ¾ of the way up, leaving the petal tips black. Some of the paint will have seeped through the petals from the inside, so just work it over smooth and only add paint if necessary. Allow to dry thoroughly.

Extra credit: Paint little red eyes on the plastic spiders. 🙂

Once everything is dry, put the rose sprigs in the vase, put it up on your fireplace mantel, table, or mix it in with your Halloween décor display, and enjoy!
