Harry Potter Inspired Butterbeer Latte Recipe

In case you didn’t know, I’m a huge Harry Potter nerd! So in honor of Harry’s birthday in a few days (July 31), I’m bringing you a delicious Harry Potter inspired butterbeer latte recipe!

Harry Potter inspired butterbeer latte recipe! Super delicious and quick to make; only five ingredients!

I was first introducted to this recipe by my sister-in-law who made it for us at Christmas one year. It is seriously the most delicious thing I’ve ever tasted!

The original recipe is below, but I’ve also included a few variations at the end, including how to order a butterbeer latte from the Starbucks secret menu!

Butterbeer Latte Recipe

The recipe below is for a single serving, but you can easily double, triple, or quadruple it (or more!) if you need to make a larger batch.

Ingredients:

  • 1 C milk
  • 1 T unsalted butter
  • 1 T brown sugar
  • 1 t vanilla extract
  • a dash of cinnamon

Directions:

Heat the brown sugar and butter in a pan. Make sure the pan is large enough to hold all of the milk, which you’ll add shortly!

Stir often and keep heating until it starts to caramelize and you just start to see large bubbles forming on the surface.

Slowly add the milk and stir until it’s completely mixed in. Don’t worry if the brown sugar and butter seems to solidify when you add the milk; just keep stirring the mixture over medium-high heat and it will all melt and mix together.

Once the milk is mixed in, add the vanilla extract and cinnamon and stir to incorporate.

Then turn off the heat, ladle it into a mug, and you have yourself a delicious butterbeer latte!

Alcoholic Butterbeer Latte Alternative

If you want an “adult” version of the drink, add a small shot of spiced rum, Southern Comfort, Kahlua, or Bailey’s. It’s delicious!

Coffee Based Butterbeer Latte Alternative

If you like coffee based lattes, no worries; it’s easy to do! Just follow the same recipe above, but instead of 1 cup of milk, use half a cup of milk and half a cup of coffee. Or whatever strength milk to coffee ratio you’d like; just make sure it ends up being 1 cup of liquid before you add it to the pot!

Starbucks Butterbeer Latte Secret Menu Alternative (Hot)

If you’re a Starbucks fan, Starbucks can make a butterbeer latte for you! It’s on their “secret menu”, but just in case your barista doesn’t know the recipe, here it is!

  • Start by ordering a whole milk steamer (whole milk makes the whole thing the correct consistency and makes it creamy enough; don’t switch this out for skim or 2%!)
  • Add Caramel syrup (2, 3, or 4 pumps, depending on size)
  • Add Toffee nut syrup (2, 3, or 4 pumps, depending on size)
  • Add Cinnamon Dolce syrup (2, 3, or 4 pumps, depending on size)
  • Whipped cream and salted caramel bits on top (or creme brulee topping if you prefer)
  • Optional: if you want the caffeine or coffee flavor, add a shot of espresso, or 2 for a grande or venti

Starbucks Butterbeer Frappucino Secret Menu Alternative (Cold)

If you’d rather a cold drink, Starbucks can make you one of those too!

  • Start with a Creme Frappuccino base (whole milk makes the whole thing the correct consistency and makes it creamy enough; don’t switch this out for skim or 2%!)
  • Add caramel syrup (2, 3, or 4 pumps, depending on size)
  • Add toffee nut syrup (2, 3, or 4 pumps, depending on size)
  • Add Cinnamon Dolce syrup (2, 3, or 4 pumps, depending on size)
  • Top with caramel drizzle and whipped cream

I pinned this to try a day too late to celebrate HP’s bday, and I just tried this tonight. OMG! It’s a caramel steamer with cinnamon. Really delicious. And if you want foam, you can add a tablespoon of cool whip (from a tub, not canned) in the bottom of the cup before you put in the latte. This works for ANY hot drink to make foam.

  12. I was looking forward to making an iced mocha in the morning, but I think I’ll be making the coffee version of the butterbeer! Can’t wait to try it!!!!
