The recipe below is for a single serving, but you can easily double, triple, or quadruple it (or more!) if you need to make a larger batch.

  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • a dash of cinnamon

How to make a butterbeer latte at home

Heat the brown sugar and butter in a pan on medium-high heat. Make sure the pan is large enough to hold all of the milk, which you’ll add shortly!

Stir often and keep heating until it starts to caramelize and you just start to see large bubbles forming on the surface.

Slowly add the milk and stir until it’s completely mixed in. Don’t worry if the brown sugar and butter seems to solidify when you add the milk; just keep stirring the mixture over medium-high heat and it will all melt and mix together.

Once the milk is mixed in, add the vanilla extract and cinnamon and stir to incorporate.

Then turn off the heat, ladle it into a mug, add another sprinkle of cinnamon on top, and you have yourself a delicious homemade butterbeer latte!

Alcoholic Butterbeer Latte Alternative

If you want an “adult” version of the drink, add a small shot of spiced rum, Southern Comfort, Kahlua, or Bailey’s. It’s delicious!

Butterbeer Coffee Recipe

If you like coffee based lattes, no worries; it’s easy to do! Just follow the same recipe above, but instead of 1 cup of milk, use half a cup of milk and half a cup of coffee. Or whatever strength milk to coffee ratio you’d like; just make sure it ends up being 1 cup of liquid before you add it to the pot!

Starbucks Secret Menu Butterbeer Latte (Hot)

If you’re a Starbucks fan, you can get a butterbeer latte from Starbucks! It’s on their “secret menu”, but just in case your barista doesn’t know the recipe, here it is!

  1. Start by ordering a whole milk steamer (whole milk makes the whole thing the correct consistency and makes it creamy enough; don’t switch this out for skim or 2%!)
  2. Add Caramel syrup, Cinnamon Dolce syrup, and Toffee Nut syrup (2, 3, or 4 pumps of each, depending on the size of your drink)
  3. Ask for whipped cream and salted caramel bits on top
  4. Optional: if you want the caffeine, add a shot of espresso, or 2 for a grande or venti

Starbucks Secret Menu Butterbeer Frappuccino (Cold)

If you’d rather a cold butterbeer latte, Starbucks can make a butterbeer frappuccino instead!

  1. Start with a Creme Frappuccino base (whole milk makes the whole thing the correct consistency and makes it creamy enough; don’t switch this out for skim or 2%!)
  2. Add Caramel syrup, Cinnamon Dolce syrup, and Toffee Nut syrup (2, 3, or 4 pumps of each, depending on the size of your drink)
  3. Top with caramel drizzle and whipped cream

Couldn’t sleep, so I thought I’d do a trial run on this recipe before making it for the kids on Harry Potter Day. Amazing! If you have an Aerolatte, you can put a little of the Butterbeer in your mug and froth it before topping it off. Very yummy and easy to make.
